Classroom Audio

Please review the following compatible classroom microphone COVID-19 precautions.

Recommended option: Sanitize the provided microphone between each speaker

NOTE: This recommended option ensures the classroom’s setup is consistent and does not require the instructor to connect/disconnect equipment and limits any class disruption that may occur as a result.

UC Davis Safety Services department has confirmed that microphones can be shared if disinfected in between uses. This is consistent with the CDC and County public health guidance for electronics. Lysol spray and Clorox wipes are acceptable products to use on our microphones based on the manufacturer’s guidance. The Classroom Operations team will place Lysol spray and Clorox wipes at all 130 general assignment classrooms to disinfect microphones in between uses. The Classroom Operations team will make sure they are at the podiums and you can call the Classroom Hotline to have some sent out to you if they are missing at the start of the class period. This option ensures the room’s setup is consistent and does not require the instructor to connect or disconnect equipment and limits any class disruption as a result.

Other options

These alternative options will require individual faculty members to plug in their external microphone at the beginning of each class, and remove their equipment at the end of each class. Each instructor will need to leave the classroom audio equipment as they found it, ready for the next instructor.

Check out a loaner microphone

Instructors can check out a dedicated microphone that they can use with classroom equipment throughout the quarter. To reserve one of these microphones, faculty should call the Classroom Hotline at 530-752-3333 (Press 1). Please be prepared to tell the technician which room(s) you will be using so you can be provided the correct microphone for that particular room’s setup. A classroom technician will make an appointment with the faculty member to distribute the microphone to them or meet them on the first class day.

Purchase a microphone

If a faculty member would like their own microphone, they can call the Classroom Hotline at 530-752-3333 (Press 1) to request one. A classroom technician will determine the appropriate make and model for the room(s) they will be teaching in, make the purchase, and coordinate an appointment with the faculty member to distribute the microphone. The cost will be covered by the campus.

Voice amplification in rooms without built-in audio

All 130 general assignment classrooms have an audio amplification setup (call the Classroom Hotline at 530-752-3333 for support). No additional voice amplification device for masked instructors is needed in these general assignment classrooms. However, if you are teaching in another room that may not have audio amplification, we have identified a device that could be purchased at low cost ($35) if voice projection while masked may be concern for you. Here is a link to purchase that audio amplification device.
